Appendix Surgery

Overview

Hospital for Appendix Surgery in Greater Noida: The appendix is a finger-shaped pouch attached to the colon, in the lower-right side of your belly. Nobody knows for sure what it does and is hence called a vestigial organ. If it becomes diseased and sore, you can develop a painful condition called appendicitis. Appendectomy is a surgery done to remove an infected Appendix. Most people who get appendicitis need surgery to remove their appendix. Appendectomy is performed as an emergency surgery. All patients recover completely if surgery is performed before the appendix bursts. Appendicitis can be life-threatening, if you don’t get it treated and it bursts.

What are the symptoms of Appendicitis?

Appendicitis starts as sudden onset of serious stomach pain. It may start near your navel or belly button and gradually move to the lower right. It might also get worse when you move around, breathe deeply, cough, or sneeze. You may also have signs like:

  • No appetite
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fever
  • Diarrhoea or constipation

What causes Appendicitis??

A blockade in the appendix can be caused by faeces, parasites, or growths. Normal bacteria that live inside the appendix grow, making it infected and swollen. This can cause inflammation. Appendicitis may be caused by digestive tract infections and inflammatory bowel disease. It is difficult to pinpoint the cause.

How It’s Diagnosed?

Pain in the belly, usually in the right side is the most often finding. Blood and urine tests, ultrasound, CT scan or MRI, may be ordered to clinch the diagnosis.

Before You Get Surgery

Antibiotics are usually prescribed to treat the infection to prevent bursting of the appendix. In the event of bursting of the appendix, an abscess can form inside the belly because of collection of pus. This might need to be drained through a needle in your abdomen. Surgery can be done only after the abscess is drained and the infection is under control. It could take a few weeks before your doctor can take out your appendix.

Surgery to Remove Your Appendix

Appendectomy operation is done under anesthesia so that you are pain-free during the operation. There are two types of surgery, an “open appendectomy,” where your surgeon makes one long cut in your belly and removes your appendix or “laparoscopic surgery,” through which the appendix is removed by making small cuts in the belly.

After Your Surgery

Your heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure will be monitored in a recovery room. These are called “vital signs”.  You will be taken to your hospital room once they are stable and you’re awake. You will be given medicine for pain. You might be able to move around after a few hours if you have had a laparoscopic surgery. It might take longer if you had open surgery. You may go home in 1 to 2 days, or it can take longer if you had a burst appendix.

What to Expect During Recovery

It’s normal to feel more tired than usual at first. Get extra sleep if you need it. Follow the surgeon’s instructions on how to slowly resume your activities.  It might take up to 2 weeks before you can do anything strenuous.
